Applied marine and food research

AZTI is a Spanish technology center conducting applied research in marine environments, food, and health. It turns scientific knowledge into solutions for businesses, public agencies, and organizations connected to the marine and food sectors, supporting innovation and more sustainable, competitive models.

AZTI organizes its work across ten research areas:

These areas are connected with eight cross-cutting themes: digitalization, the circular economy, the blue economy, resilience and global change, One Health, the bioeconomy, healthy aging, and strategic partnerships.

Industries and partners served

AZTI develops solutions for food companies, fisheries and aquaculture, marine and port infrastructure, offshore industries, ingredient manufacturers, Industry 4.0, industrial equipment manufacturers, and innovation management. It also works at the intersection of food and health.

Services and collaboration

The center provides applied research, technology development, and scientific consulting, and offers products of its own. Its publications include a report on phage technology and applications in the food and agriculture sector. AZTI also shares information about funding opportunities for innovation projects.

Its partners include Euskalmet, Copernicus Marine Service, Tecnalia, the University of the Basque Country, the Plentzia Marine Station, the Naval and Marine Technology Center, EIT Food, Spain’s Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition, and European and Spanish technology platforms in the marine and food sectors.
