Agricultural cooperative in Sort

Agrària i Ramadera del Pallars de Sort SCCL is a cooperative based in Sort, Lleida, that makes animal feed and serves the livestock sector. According to its website, livestock farmers founded it around 1920, making it the second cooperative in Catalonia. It began as a dairy cooperative producing butter; as the industry changed, it shifted its focus to feed manufacturing and services for livestock producers.

Animal feed and forage

The cooperative makes conventional and organic feed and distributes forage. It prepares feed mixes without additives, using grains purchased directly from producers and natural supplements. It also distributes organic feed in the surrounding region.

• Natural feed and grains for cows, calves, horses, lambs, pigs, chickens, rabbits, dogs, and cats.
• Organic feed for calves, lambs, laying hens, and broiler chickens.
• Conventional and organic forage in bales.

Farm and livestock supplies

The cooperative supplies products for agricultural and livestock work:

• Agriculture: seeds, fertilizers, crop protection products, equipment, plastic sheeting and netting, hoses, cowbells, irrigation supplies, and more.
• Livestock: waterers, hoses, trailers, chainsaws, tillers, tools, nails, feeders, collars, cowbells, shepherd’s umbrellas, and more.

Technical services and paperwork

Services include ration formulation for ruminants using forage; environmental advice, assessments, manure management plans, and records; traceability and hygiene forms and protocols; pest and weed control for gardens and orchards; grants and insurance; and DUN applications. The cooperative is an Agricultural and Livestock Advisory Entity offering integrated services, training, and animal-welfare courses.

Fuel and biomass

It supplies diesel for vehicles and tractors, farms, home delivery, and heating. It also sells biomass pellets and briquettes.

Veterinary services and medication

Independent cattle and sheep veterinarians in the Pallars Sobirà area offer services through the cooperative, which also sells medication.

Facilities

The cooperative has two main sites: the feed factory and the service center and farm store, along with its offices at 28 Carrer Pol i Aleu in downtown Sort. Since 2008, it has also operated a forage warehouse that stores organic feed on the road to Llessui, past La Bastida, about five minutes from central Sort. In addition, it manages an organic calf-finishing farm on the road to Estac at Finca Cassovall. Livestock farmers from Pallars Sobirà and neighboring valleys bring certified-organic calves there for finishing before they are slaughtered and marketed as certified-organic meat.
