What ASAO is

Asociación Sevillana Amigos de la Ópera (ASAO) is a cultural organization founded in 1990, as Seville's Teatro de la Maestranza was being built for the Expo '92 period. Its purpose is to broaden knowledge of opera and lyric theatre and support their presence in the city's cultural life.

Activities

The association maintains a program centred on opera and singing:

  • Nuevas Voces Ciudad de Sevilla singing competition
  • Masterclasses

Its recent initiatives have included advocating for a Seville opera festival and organising recitals and staged works, including Puccini's Suor Angelica at the Real Fábrica de Artillería.

Leadership

ASAO is chaired by Ignacio Trujillo, a lawyer and art-history graduate who works as a legal officer at the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions. Vice-chair Ramón María Serrera Contreras is Professor of the History of the Americas at the University of Seville. The board also includes Pascual Muñoz for social action and artistic coordinator Francisco Manuel Soriano, a pianist and professor of vocal repertoire at the higher conservatoire.
