Lifelong learning for adults 50 and older
UNATE, the Permanent University of Cantabria, is a nonprofit organization recognized as serving the public interest. It provides non-degree lifelong learning for people age 50 and older. Its work promotes active aging and the participation of older adults in the region's social and cultural life.
Learning areas
Courses and activities are organized across several areas:
- Health and well-being.
- Art and recreation.
- Languages, including a language classroom in Torrelavega.
- Humanities and social sciences.
- Information and communication technologies.
The organization also seeks qualified instructors in these areas.
Locations across Cantabria
UNATE has locations in many Cantabrian communities: Santander, with the Náutica, Magallanes, Perines, and Vargas centers; Torrelavega; Reinosa; Laredo; Valles Pasiegos; Camargo; Bezana; Suances; Los Corrales de Buelna; Arenas de Iguña; Valdeolea; Puente Viesgo; Corvera de Toranzo; Santa María de Cayón; Piélagos; Villacarriedo; Castro Urdiales; and Santoña.
Cultural and social programs
In addition to classes, UNATE organizes trips, guided cultural visits, the “José Luis Casado Soto” Open Chair, and a photography contest. Its social program focuses on four priorities: human rights and active aging, older women, unwanted loneliness, and caregiving. It works in partnership with the European Foundation for Older Adults (PEM).
