About Espai Obert La Serra

Learning among vineyards and woods

Espai Obert La Serra is a private alternative school in Sant Pere de Ribes, Barcelona, set among vineyards and woodland. It is organized as a nonprofit consumer cooperative and was recognized by the Government of Catalonia in 2015. The school was among the area's early adopters of this educational approach.

School programs

  • Escuelita: For children ages 3 to 5.
  • Elementary school: For children ages 6 to 12.

The school's approach emphasizes independence, self-regulation, and students' active role in their own learning and decision-making. Small groups of 5 to 12 children allow for close, individualized support.

Cooperative model and community

Founded in 2013, the school is a cooperative that brings together families as consumers and workers. Families participate in managing the school and shaping its educational approach. The school community includes about 90 families from Catalonia, elsewhere in Spain, and other countries, giving it an international and multicultural character.
