Salamanca’s green-infrastructure strategy

Savia is Salamanca City Council’s green-infrastructure strategy, designed to guide the city toward a healthier future by integrating nature and heritage. Its goals are to improve biodiversity and residents’ quality of life. It is part of the Special Plan for the Protection of Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity (PEPIVB).

Featured projects

  • CoNEcta Salamanca: An urban-development project in the northeast that will benefit more than 33,500 residents in the Garrido, Chinchibarra, Estación, and Salesas neighborhoods. The total budget is €15,227,851, with 60% provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
  • Green Rails: Restoring nature along the urban section of the former Ruta de la Plata railway, which will become a greenway. The project is supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), with ERDF co-funding.

The Savia strategy also includes initiatives such as the Savia Green Network, Savia areas and map, Savia and the Sustainable Development Goals, Savia projects, stories, and awards. Salamanca City Council has also received Sanitas’s Healthy Cities award, which includes €70,000 worth of trees, and has supported the planting of 30,000 trees toward a goal of 200,000 trees in the city.
