About Casa Escuela Santiago Uno

Education and social support in Salamanca

Casa Escuela Santiago Uno is a compensatory school and social program run by the Pious Schools of Betania in Salamanca. It focuses on formal and nonformal education for young people facing vulnerability, whom the organization refers to as “those most left behind.” The school combines accredited education with social and employment-integration projects.

Education and training

The school offers formal and nonformal education, including a Recreation and Leisure School and a Youth Activities School with scheduled courses. According to figures on its website, 30% of its staff are former students, 90% of students successfully complete their internships, and more than half go on to work at their internship site or another company in the field.

Employment and social-integration projects

The organization develops programs to help young people in care and young people involved with the juvenile justice system transition into work. Its projects include a landscaping company, a food truck, a wildlife hospital, and a rural-development cooperative. It also works with partners to revive businesses in depopulated parts of Spain and to support older adults, with students from its advanced social-integration program.

Garden and food delivery

The school has a garden and offers weekly home delivery of locally sourced food, describing the service as direct from producer to consumer.

Community and intercultural exchange

The school creates opportunities for community life and cultural exchange, including participation by Christian and Muslim communities. Its “Llenando escuelas” project received the second Social Volunteering Award from Fundación Telefónica.

Publications

School director Jesús Garrote wrote Con permiso de los adolescentes. Día a día en la Casa Escuela Santiago Uno (With the Teenagers’ Permission: Day by Day at Casa Escuela Santiago Uno), a book about nonformal education based on 20 years of collaborative work with educators and young people.
