About Associació de Persones Sordes de Sabadell
Community, access, and representation
Associació de Persones Sordes de Sabadell (APSS) is a nonprofit based in Sabadell, Barcelona, serving the city's Deaf community. It represents and advocates for Deaf people, organizes social, cultural, and sports activities, and offers Catalan Sign Language (LSC) education.
Catalan Sign Language interpreters
One of APSS's core services is Catalan Sign Language interpretation, funded by Sabadell City Council and managed by the association. The service is intended to remove communication barriers in everyday life. To request an interpreter, contact APSS in person during office hours or reach out in advance by WhatsApp or email; requests depend on availability.
Sign language classes
APSS offers Catalan Sign Language classes with the Federation of Deaf People of Catalonia, which has an agreement with the Government of Catalonia. Offerings include yearlong and intensive summer courses. For example, pre-registration for the 2026 summer intensive course was open through June 14.
Activities and association life
The association has a regular calendar of social and cultural activities, including Sant Joan celebrations, the autumn chestnut festival, calçotada meals, chess and Rummikub tournaments, walks, workshops, and talks on topics such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and unhealthy relationships. Its sports team, CESS, competes in badminton and has won national titles.
Advocacy and partnerships
APSS takes part in civic events and works with public agencies and community organizations. Association representatives attended the Barcelona presentation of the Government of Catalonia's 2026–2028 Catalan Sign Language Strategy. APSS also works with Sabadell City Council and the Federation of Deaf People of Catalonia (FESOCA).
