About the project

Sonidos Olvidados is an educational creative ethnomusicology project devoted to recovering and sharing musical expressions from the past, created in the Ibero-American world and now unfamiliar to much of the public. It seeks to bridge the gap between academic music research and society by presenting its content in an engaging and entertaining way through creativity and advanced technology.

Geographic scope and approach

The project initially focuses on Mexico, Spain, and Cuba, with plans to expand geographically. It emphasizes repertoires that have been overlooked for nearly a century, recovering music created by little-known professionals and amateurs, as well as music considered “of the people” or “national”—anonymous music that circulated widely among different social groups. The information presented is based primarily on rigorous research conducted by the project leaders.

Team

Research and project direction are led by Lénica Reyes Zúñiga and José Miguel Hernández Jaramillo, who hold Ph.D.s in Music with a specialization in Ethnomusicology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). José Miguel Hernández Jaramillo, Lénica Reyes Zúñiga, and Hugo Hernández Aznar work on design, web development, and programming. Yois Kristal Paniagua Guzmán handles content consulting and design; translations are by Citlali Clairin Vázquez, Hugo Hernández Aznar, and Emilia Reyes Zúñiga.
