About Rubinum S.A.

Animal-Feed Probiotic Production

Rubinum S.A. produces and sells Toyocerin®, a probiotic feed additive for animals, and markets it worldwide. The company operates from its headquarters in Rubí, near Barcelona, Spain, and says the product is available in more than 20 countries.

History

Toyocerin® originated in Europe in 1988, when Japanese company Toyo Jozo Ltd. formed a subsidiary with Andersen S.A. called Toyo Jozo S.A., based in Rubí. After Asahi Kasei Corporation acquired it in 1992, the company became Asahi Vet S.A. In 2005, Andersen S.A. bought all of Asahi Kasei Corporation’s shares, creating the current Rubinum S.A. Since a change in ownership in March 2008, Rubinum has focused on producing and selling Toyocerin® worldwide.

Main Product: Toyocerin®

Toyocerin® is a natural microorganism (Bacillus toyonensis) whose primary function is to stabilize gastrointestinal microflora, improve production performance, and support nutrient digestion. It was the first probiotic authorized in the European Union as an animal-feed additive and is among the most extensively studied. The Bacillus toyonensis strain was isolated from soil in Japan and has not been genetically modified. The product has a long market history in Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia, and South America, with more than 45 years of use cited by the company.

The product has demonstrated in vitro and in vivo capacity to inhibit the growth of zoonotic bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Studies cited by the company have found lower Salmonella prevalence in broiler chickens and finishing pigs fed diets supplemented with Bacillus toyonensis.
