About Miguel Varela
Albariño From the Val do Salnés
Miguel Varela is a winery in Galicia’s Rías Baixas designation of origin. The project brings together the Varela Gestoso family with winemaker José Luis Mateo and Cayetano Otero, focusing on Albariño and the character of the Val do Salnés.
First Wine and Vineyard
The winery’s first wine, Viñas de Miguel Varela, comes from the Louciñáns vineyard. The winery describes it as a single-vineyard white made from Albariño vines about 70 years old and aged for 15 months in French oak barrels. The wine is signed by winemaker José Luis Mateo.
Parcels and Terroir
The winery reports managing about 20 hectares across more than 50 parcels in the Val do Salnés, at elevations below 100 meters. Vines range from 20 to 70 years old and are trained on the region’s traditional trellis system. The soils are granitic and relatively sandy, while the local climate is Atlantic, with mild temperatures and rainfall concentrated from October through March.
The winery sells online within Spain and provides phone and email contact through its website.
