Museo Salgadeiras de Moreiras

At Punta Moreiras in O Grove, this municipal museum uses restored salt-fish factories to tell the story of Galicia’s fishing communities, from salting and shellfish gathering to boatbuilding and navigation.

About Museo Salgadeiras de Moreiras

Inside the buildings that shaped a coastal trade

At Punta Moreiras, the Salgadeiras de Moreiras museum is devoted to the working life of Galicia’s fishing communities. Its setting is part of the story: two restored salting factories stand where four once operated, bringing visitors into the spaces associated with preserving sardines and other fish before refrigeration transformed the trade.

The museum follows that work beyond the factory floor. Its sections cover the salting process, fishing methods, shellfish gathering, hermetic canning, rope and net making, traditional boatbuilding, and navigation equipment. Together, they show how coastal livelihoods depended on a linked body of knowledge: reading the sea, harvesting its resources, preserving the catch, and building and maintaining the tools to do it.

A local history told through practical skills

Rather than presenting fishing only as a story of boats and catches, the museum gives space to the labor and crafts behind them. The displays connect food preservation with carpentry, cordage, and the changing technology of seafaring. That makes the visit useful for understanding O Grove as a place shaped by the sea, as well as for families and travelers looking for a focused cultural stop beyond the shoreline. The museum also hosts activities in its restored buildings, extending the site’s role from exhibition space to a venue for public programs.
