About the association
Juezas y Jueces para la Democracia (JJpD) is a Spanish judicial association founded in 1984. It brings together members of the judiciary to defend judicial independence and fundamental rights and improve the justice system. The association describes itself as pluralistic, democratic, and participatory, with a cross-cutting focus on human rights, gender, and social justice.
Public work and advocacy
JJpD's work includes collective discussion, public engagement, and proposals for judicial reform. It publishes statements, information notes, proposals, and technical reports on laws and the operation of the justice system. The association also has regional sections and working committees. Its annual congresses are open to members and serve as a forum for discussion and decision-making.
Publications and reports
Recent materials include reports on the justice system's complaint and suggestion process; changes to Regulation 2/2018 on variable compensation; judicial response protocols for emergencies and disasters; and changes required by Organic Law 1/2025 on the efficiency of Spain's public justice service. The association also issues statements on discretionary appointments, gender-based violence, expansion of the judiciary, and judicial independence internationally.
International work
JJpD participates in MEDEL (Magistrats Européens pour la Démocratie et les Libertés), a network of European judges and prosecutors. It also speaks out about judicial independence cases in countries such as Guatemala, Tunisia, Hungary, and Poland.
Member services
The association offers a confidential “Judge's Mailbox” for questions and support on administrative matters such as leave, vacations, and assignments; workplace matters such as disciplinary procedures, occupational health, workloads, and accommodations; and legal issues. Membership includes access to annual congresses and working committees.
