About Fundación Biodiversidad

About the foundation

Fundación Biodiversidad is a public foundation under Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). Its goal is to help reverse biodiversity loss by conserving healthy ecosystems, restoring degraded ecosystems, using biodiversity sustainably, and reducing the causes of its decline.

Areas of work

The foundation organizes its work around several themes:

  • Terrestrial ecosystems: conservation, restoration, bioeconomy, and green jobs.
  • Marine ecosystems: conservation, restoration, and development of the blue economy.
  • Urban environments: strengthening the role of nature in cities to improve resilience, quality of life, and health.
  • Causes of biodiversity loss: measures to slow and reverse decline.
  • Knowledge and information management: decisions based on the best available science.
  • Private sector: participation in the ecological transition through innovative solutions and nature-positive commitments.
  • International relations: technical and institutional support for developing countries and stronger commitments from Spain.
  • Environmental communications, public education, and awareness.
  • Gender perspective: the relationship between gender and the environment.

Projects and funding

The foundation has supported more than 2,000 projects and allocated nearly €700 million through 13 funding calls under Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR). It has also been designated an Intermediate Body for Spain's Multiregional European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Program for 2021–27, supporting actions under the National Strategy for Green Infrastructure, Connectivity, and Ecological Restoration (IVCRE). It also participates in the European Biodiversity Partnership (Biodiversa+).

Public education

The foundation develops public-education and awareness activities, including the Naturalmente podcast, and publishes resources, reports, and activity summaries. It provides a reporting channel, training scholarships, and job opportunities.
