About FERO Cáncer
Bringing cancer research closer to patients
FERO Cáncer is a national nonprofit foundation that selects and funds translational cancer research in Spain. Oncologist Josep Baselga (1959–2021) founded it in 2001. Its goal is to shorten the time between scientific discovery and its use in patient care.
How research is selected
The foundation focuses on translational research with realistic potential to become treatment. An independent scientific committee evaluates projects against international standards of scientific excellence. The foundation says funding decisions are made without political or pharmaceutical ties.
Projects and research centers
FERO Cáncer partners with leading oncology institutes in Spain. Projects listed in its profile include:
- VHIO Barcelona: Advanced molecular diagnostics, serving 2,200 patients a year.
- INCLIVA Valencia: Targeted therapies, serving 279 patients a year.
- Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid: Molecular diagnostics, with 40 patients in a clinical trial.
- Clínic Barcelona: Gynecologic translational research, serving 300 patients a year.
Dr. Josep Tabernero, director of VHIO, is a member of the foundation's scientific committee.
Funding and recognition
The foundation reports investing more than €30 million in research and working with a network of more than 1,000 researchers and four oncology institutes in Spain. It has received the National Scientific Philanthropy Award and the Dona con Confianza seal. It publishes audited accounts each year and impact reports.
Research grants and events
FERO Cáncer administers research grants, including the FERO Dr. Baselga Grant for oncology research projects. The foundation also organizes events and an annual fundraising gala.
