Oil refinery in Muskiz, Bizkaia, partly owned by Repsol and Kutxabank, and transitioning toward a multi-energy and circular-economy industrial model.
About Petronor
Refining and Energy Operations
Petronor (Petróleos del Norte, S.A.) is an industrial and energy company headquartered in Muskiz, Bizkaia. Its facilities are located in the municipalities of Muskiz, Abanto-Zierbena, and Zierbena. Repsol owns 85.98% of the company and Kutxabank owns 14.02%.
Industrial Transformation
Founded as an oil refinery, Petronor is transitioning toward a multi-energy industrial model and a circular-economy hub. Following an investment of nearly €1 billion in its coking unit, the refinery operates with zero fuel-oil production while increasing gasoline, diesel, and kerosene output.
Its decarbonization roadmap has four pillars: circular economy, replacing some crude oil with biological feedstocks and waste; renewable fuels, including renewable hydrogen, advanced biofuels, and synthetic fuels; changes to process energy, replacing natural gas with renewable hydrogen and electricity from renewable sources; and carbon capture and use.
Employment and Community
Petronor directly employs more than 1,000 people, in addition to over 6,000 workers at partner companies. It has strong ties to Bizkaia and develops plans for sustainability, technological innovation, and regional development.
