About Petronor
Refining and Energy in Bizkaia
Petronor (Petróleos del Norte, S.A.) is an industrial energy company with facilities in the Bizkaia municipalities of Muskiz, Abanto-Zierbena, and Zierbena. Refining is its core business, and the company is working to transition toward a multi-energy and circular-economy model.
Ownership and Workforce
Repsol owns an 85.98% stake in the company and Kutxabank owns 14.02%. Petronor has more than 1,000 direct employees and more than 6,000 workers through partner companies.
Industrial Transformation
Petronor completed an initial major transformation through a substantial investment program that reduced fuel-oil production while increasing gasoline, diesel, and kerosene output. Following an investment of nearly €1 billion in its coker unit, the refinery can operate with zero fuel-oil production.
Since late 2019, the company has been pursuing a second transformation to become a circular-economy and clean-energy hub. Its roadmap includes:
- Partially replacing crude oil with bio-based feedstocks and waste materials.
- Producing renewable fuels, including renewable hydrogen, advanced biofuels, and synthetic fuels.
- Replacing natural gas with renewable hydrogen and using electricity from renewable sources.
- Capturing and using CO2 as a feedstock for synthetic fuels.
The company has set a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with Repsol Group.
