About Memorial Juan Antonio García Acero

About the memorial

The Memorial Juan Antonio García Acero is a digital historical memorial honoring a Spanish victim of deportation to Nazi concentration camps. It documents his life and death; it is a memorial project rather than a commercial business.

Biographical details

  • Born November 17, 1893, in Villanueva de la Serena, Badajoz, Spain
  • Went into exile in France in 1939 after the Spanish Civil War
  • Captured in France in 1940 and deported to the Mauthausen-Gusen camp complex
  • Died December 23, 1941, at Gusen, Austria

Context: Stolpersteine

The memorial explains the Stolpersteine, or “stumbling stones,” conceived by German artist Gunter Demnig. These small brass plaques, measuring 10 by 10 centimeters, are set into pavement in front of a victim’s last freely chosen residence. Bending down to read a name is described as a gesture of respect. The traditional inscription “Here lived…” restores the names and identities of people targeted for erasure from history.
