About Industrias Arpo

Fish Oil and Fishmeal Processing

Industrias Arpo processes, refines, and markets fish oils, fishmeal, and recovered vegetable oil. Its history dates to 1941, when it began operating in Vigo as ARPO, S.A., using fish byproducts. In January 1989, it moved its facilities to Mos, diversified its activities, and became Industrias Afines, S.L. In 2018, it brought both names together under the Industrias Arpo brand while retaining Industrias Afines, S.L. as its legal name.

Products

  • Fish oil: sourced domestically and imported. Its properties vary according to fishing area, species, and season, which affects its end use.
  • Fishmeal: a source of natural protein and fatty acids used as an ingredient in feed for different animal species.
  • Recovered vegetable oil: the company receives used vegetable oil for recovery and technical use, consistent with circular-economy principles.

Applications and Markets

Products are mainly sold into three markets:

  • Animal feed: fish oil provides Omega-3 and fishmeal provides protein; both are used in pet food, aquaculture, pig farming, and poultry.
  • Industrial uses: fish oil is used to make putties, paints and resins, tanning products, detergents, and other industrial goods. The company says it is open to working with new customers and suppliers to identify additional uses.
  • Human consumption: fish oil and fishmeal are sold for use in products such as dietary supplements.

Services

The facilities offer storage, loading and unloading, and flexitank-container services.

Facilities and Capacity

The plant is in the municipality of Mos on a site of more than 13,000 square meters. The property includes a 400-square-meter office building and a 2,000-square-meter industrial building housing the refinery, along with storage tanks holding approximately 2,000 tons. Crude oil is received in the tanks, where quality control, cleaning, and separation by intended market begin before the material moves to the refinery.

Quality and Certifications

Industrias Arpo has followed ISO 9001 guidelines since 1999. It also holds ISO 14001 and EMAS environmental certifications and, since 2017, GMP+ certification for good practices in the food industry. The company has implemented a hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) management system across production. It conducts regular chemical and bacteriological testing, using an in-house laboratory for basic tests and an external laboratory for additional analysis. The website also lists MSC and ASC certificates.

Suppliers

The company works with domestic and international suppliers, most of them fishmeal manufacturers whose operations produce the fish oil used as a raw material at the refinery.
