What Gandón is

Gandón is a Galician fishing vessel operator with more than seven decades of history. Its four freezer trawlers work in international fisheries, including areas regulated by NAFO and NEAFC, and the company reports annual landings of about 4,500 metric tons of frozen seafood. Processing and freezing take place aboard the vessels to preserve the catch for the commercial market.

Fleet and fishing grounds

The current fleet consists of four freezer trawlers: Ana Gandón, Esperanza Menduíña, Hermanos Gandón and Cuatro. Gandón holds fishing quotas in several international grounds, including NAFO and NEAFC waters. Its company history says it was among the first Spanish operators to enter NAFO grounds after the Spanish fleet's 1989 departure from Namibia, bringing species then less familiar in Spain, including Greenland halibut, into its commercial range.

Commercial formats

Gandón offers different cuts, packaging and presentations for business buyers. It describes as many as four processing cuts and six preservation packages, with market-specific formats. Operating its own fleet gives the company direct control over harvesting and onboard processing, while actual supply remains tied to quota, season, catch and regulatory conditions.

History

Wenceslao Gandón Casal founded the company in 1951 after working on his father's boats. His children took over in 1980. The fleet evolved through vessels including Ana María Galdón in 1973, Hermanos Gandón and Esperanza Menduíña in 1988, Aldán in 1989 and Ana Gandón in 2001. In 2020, the company renewed its visual identity and opened a commercial office in Vigo.
