Panépica

An academic project studying the language and philology of the Poema de mio Cid and early Spanish epic, with a glossary, digital corpus, and research resources.

About Panépica

Research on early Spanish epic

Panépica is an academic research project focused on the linguistic and philological study of early Spanish epic, of which four poems survive: the Poema de mio Cid, the Cantar de Roncesvalles, the Gesta de las Mocedades de Rodrigo, and the Epitafio épico del Cid. It presents itself as a scholarly portal for researchers and students of these medieval texts.

Research resources

  • Digital glossary: A glossary of the Poema de mio Cid and early epic, using a relational lexicographic approach inspired by the design of the Royal Spanish Academy’s Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DHLE).
  • Digital corpus: Readers can access the epic texts through the four-part editorial system of the CHARTA network: diplomatic transcription, paleographic transcription, critical presentation, and a digital image of the source manuscript. The corpus is lemmatized and tagged using the TEI-TOK platform and the EAGLES tag set.
  • Philology resource center: Bibliography, an edition guide to the epic texts, biographies of epic scholars, a character network, and links.
  • Blog: Project updates and news about epic poetry and its texts.

Team and locations

The project is led by Javier Rodríguez Molina, with Gael Vaamonde among those responsible for it. It is based at the University of Granada (Department of Spanish Language, Cartuja Campus, 18071 Granada) and the Complutense University of Madrid (Faculty of Philology, Seminario Menéndez Pidal, Building D, ground floor, C/ Profesor Aranguren s/n, 28040 Madrid).

Funding and recognition

Panépica received funding from the BBVA Foundation through a Leonardo Grant for Young Researchers in 2019 and from Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities in 2024 through project PID2023-150572NB-I00. In 2024, it received the Archiletras Research Award at Casa de América.

Contribute

The project accepts contributions to correct errors in transcriptions and glossary entries and to transcribe additional materials—romances, chronicles, and news reports—for possible future inclusion.
