Fundación para la Investigación del Clima - FICLIMA

Climate research and applied services

Fundación para la Investigación del Clima (FIC) is a private nonprofit established in 1995; its technical team began climate research in 1992. Based at 45 Calle de Modesto Lafuente, 28003 Madrid, the foundation develops research and solutions related to climate change, climatology, meteorology, the environment, and development cooperation.

Areas of work

FIC works in five main areas:

• Climate: Climate services for businesses, government agencies, and organizations.
• Agriculture: Decision-support solutions across the agricultural supply chain.
• Biodiversity and natural resources: Products and services for conservation and ecosystem restoration.
• Cities and infrastructure: Tools to improve urban resilience to climate change.
• International cooperation: Knowledge and technology-transfer projects with development agencies.

Services

The foundation offers climate services based on its own scientific work:

• Local climate-change projections.
• Seasonal and decadal forecasting.
• Climate-change impact assessments.
• Extreme-event forecasting.
• Consulting and adaptation strategies.
• Early-warning systems.
• Research, development, and innovation, plus training to strengthen scientific capacity.

Research and projects

For more than two decades, FIC has generated knowledge about potential climate-change impacts and adaptation. Early in its history, it developed Spain's first future-climate simulations to support decisions about biodiversity and forests. Recent projects include Rain4Africa, for local-scale rainfall forecasting; ForPeat, on carbon sequestration and biodiversity in European peatlands; PINEA, restoring stone pine in Doñana; SICMA Canarias, which received the Chris Binnie Award in London; ForesteCCO; ICARIA; and Santander Capital Natural.
