About Fundación Secretariado Gitano

Equal opportunities for Roma communities

Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) is an intercultural nonprofit that has worked for more than 40 years to advance the social inclusion and equal opportunities of Roma people in Spain and Europe. Its work focuses on social advancement, recognition of the Roma community, and the rights of Roma people.

Programs and areas of work

  • Education: Promociona provides academic guidance and school support to about 1,800 students each school year. The foundation reports that six in 10 Roma young people do not complete compulsory education and that the school-failure rate among Roma students is 63%. Its education programs have served 5,840 students in total.
  • Employment: For more than 20 years, FSG has run job training and employment programs such as Acceder, Acceder Joven, Aprender Trabajando, Formatéate, Empleando Digital, social-integration businesses, and TándEM. The foundation says four in 10 Acceder participants find jobs. It also reports an unemployment rate of 52% among Roma people, three times the rate for the general population (14.5%).
  • Equal treatment and combating anti-Roma discrimination: FSG defends Roma people's rights and full citizenship, works to address underreporting of discrimination, and advocates for effective enforcement of anti-discrimination laws. Since 2023, it has run the European IgualTrato program. It reports having addressed 4,608 discrimination cases since 2004.
  • Roma women: Through Calí, a program promoting equality for Roma women, the foundation works with 1,200 women each year to expand opportunities for social advancement and participation and address barriers based on gender and ethnicity.
  • Safe and adequate housing: FSG reports that about 2,000 Roma households—roughly 11,000 people—still live in shantytowns, and that 270 such settlements remain across Spain.
