About Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles

Preserving Spain’s railway heritage

Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles was established on February 20, 1985. Major companies in Spain’s public railway sector are represented on its board. The foundation is responsible for recovering, safeguarding, developing, and sharing the country’s historic, cultural, scientific, and technological railway heritage, in collaboration with the sector.

Railway museums and research centers

The foundation manages and preserves two railway museums:

  • Museo del Ferrocarril de Madrid, housed in the historic Madrid-Delicias station.
  • Museu del Ferrocarril de Catalunya, in Vilanova i la Geltrú.

It also operates the Railway Historical Archive, Railway Documentation Center, Railway Library, and Railway Training Center, resources for researchers and institutional users.

Research, publishing, and public programs

Its work spans culture, research, training, and industry outreach. The foundation publishes the specialized magazine Vía Libre and books, organizes exhibitions, awards, and events such as Train Week, and promotes projects such as Vías Verdes, which repurposes former railway routes.

Events in a historic setting

The foundation has been based at Madrid’s Palacio de Fernán Núñez since its establishment. It also offers private event space for signings, agreements, board meetings, and product presentations.
