About Café Ortega
Eight decades of coffee roasting in the Canary Islands
Café Ortega is a family-owned Canarian company that selects, roasts, produces, and distributes coffee. José Ortega Bolaños founded it in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1946, initially roasting coffee by hand in a small drum in the family attic. After eight decades, it is among the archipelago's established coffee companies and remains entirely Canarian-owned.
Products
- Traditional Coffee
- Organic Coffee, launched in 2020
- Orígenes collection, with Colombia (2025), Costa Rica, and Kenya (2026) varieties
The company sources beans from coffee-growing regions around the world and treats roasting as central to the character of each coffee.
Facilities and capacity
Café Ortega has modernized its facilities and added production technology, including a roaster with a capacity of 300 kilograms per batch. The company says this improves efficiency and product consistency. Its plant is at Calle Agaete 23, Lomo Blanco Industrial Estate, Las Torres, 35010 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Certifications and quality
It obtained its first IFS Food (International Featured Standards) certification in 2013. This food-industry standard assesses production-process safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. The company also holds ISO 14001 environmental-management certification.
Family history and leadership
After the founder's death, his sons Francisco (Paco) and José (Pepín) Ortega took over and expanded sales in Gran Canaria. Ariel Ortega became general manager in 2012, during a period focused on innovation and continuous improvement. In 2026, a fourth generation joined when Pablo Ortega became commercial director.
