About Fundación Juan Negrín

History and democratic thought

Fundación Juan Negrín is a private, nonprofit cultural foundation of public interest based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It researches, develops, and shares democratic and socially progressive humanist thought, with special attention to Juan Negrín López (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1892–Paris, 1956), a scientist and president of the government of the Second Spanish Republic. The institution focuses on the early 20th century, Spain's Silver Age of culture and science, the Second Republic, and the Spanish Civil War.

Archive and library

The foundation preserves the Negrín Archive, which includes the statesman's personal library of about 8,000 volumes brought from France, along with documents and personal belongings. Notable holdings include 470 maps used by General Rojo during the Battle of the Ebro, available to consult online, and documents related to André Malraux's film Sierra de Teruel. The archive also holds the score for España peregrina (Canción del destierro), recorded in Paris in 1945 and shared by the foundation 80 years later.

Public programs

The foundation organizes conferences, lectures, and exhibitions, and publishes educational materials and press dossiers. Its initiatives include the lecture series for “El viaje de Celia: la literatura infantil y juvenil española entre 1920 y 1950,” the event “Golpe a la Democracia: Canarias, julio de 1936,” and the exhibition “Juan Negrín. Un canario en la historia,” with materials for early and elementary grades as well as middle and high school. It also contributes to ecca.edu's “Diálogos con la cultura” podcast and maintains a presence in the press and on social media.

Awards and institutional connections

The foundation presents the Juan Negrín Award. In 2024, it went to Ernest Arenas, an internationally recognized Parkinson's researcher, and was awarded by the Spanish Society of Physiological Sciences. The foundation also advocated naming Gran Canaria's major hospital “Doctor Negrín”; the Canary Islands Parliament approved the name unanimously on March 3, 1999. The Complutense University of Madrid has published a facsimile of Negrín's doctoral dissertation online, and the foundation maintains ties with academic institutions and the PES Group in the European Committee of the Regions.
