AE Itaca

Learning and community in Collblanc-La Torrassa

Associació Educativa Itaca is a nonprofit based in the Collblanc-La Torrassa neighborhood of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona. Recognized as a public-benefit organization by the Government of Catalonia, it has provided after-school education for neighborhood children, young people, and families since 1977.

Programs and areas of work

The association runs social and educational programs for different stages of life:

• Early childhood and family support: guidance from pregnancy through age 3, with attention to the first 1,000 days of life.
• Children and after-school education: educational recreation for children ages 3 to 12.
• Teenagers and young adults: safe spaces, academic guidance, and personal empowerment for young people ages 12 to 16.
• Families and community: positive-parenting spaces and work with local community partners.
• Employment and training: educational and career support for young people ages 16 to 30, including help continuing their education and accessing postsecondary programs.
• Community development: participation in local efforts involving education, health, and communication.

Specific programs include Casal de Verano, Casal Diari, Casal de Joves, Espai Familiar, Esplai, Grup Itaca, Inserjove, Dinem Junts, Mentora, SADI, APS, PCI, Espais Oberts, Oficina de Drets, and Perinatal AMAM.

Team and reach

The association has more than 70 team members, a number that nearly triples during the summer season.

Recognition

In 2023, AE Itaca received a Jaume Ciurana Award for youth civic action for “Somos barrio y hacemos comunidad” (“We Are the Neighborhood and We Build Community”), part of the 2023 Civism Awards.
