Social housing and support through life

Fundació Família i Benestar Social (FIBS) is a private nonprofit established in 1987. It works with people of all ages to help them build a life plan by promoting social housing and providing services for older adults in Catalonia.

History

FIBS was founded in 1987 to support people facing vulnerability. In 1989, it acquired a building at 1 Carrer Rull in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and opened its first residential and daytime-services center for older adults, Llar la Mercè. From 1988 to 1993, it developed inclusion studies, programs, and workshops in neighborhoods across Catalonia. Since 1993, the foundation has directly promoted social housing and has built 3,000 homes in more than 50 Catalan municipalities.

Areas of work

• Social housing: develops and manages housing and applications for social-housing projects, some in public-private partnerships with city governments and other foundations.
• Social action and support: helps people navigate key stages of life.
• Llar la Mercè: residential and daytime services for older adults, including ActivaMENT, a group psychosocial program for adults over 55 in Ciutat Vella.
• Edifici Adela Barquín: a residential project with community-based support.

Featured projects

Recent projects include Can Rivière; Marina in Arenys de Mar, a 50-unit social-rental development launched with Fundació Grup Qualitat and Arenys de Mar City Council; and Edifici Adela Barquín, whose 2025 evaluation report describes high resident satisfaction.

Transparency and funding

FIBS publishes its financial statements and maintains an ethics channel. It is partly funded by donations and member dues and accepts support from businesses.
