About Basondo
A refuge for wildlife in Urdaibai
Basondo is a wildlife refuge set among the meadows and woods of Urdaibai. Its roughly 60,000 square meters shelter animals associated with the region, including roe deer, wild boar, red and fallow deer, genets, badgers, wildcats, owls, and birds of prey. Visitors may also see lynx, wolves, and bison, species that are no longer found in the wild in this part of the Basque Country.
A walking circuit of about a mile makes the refuge accessible at an unhurried pace, with much of the route paved. The experience is about observing animals and learning about their habitats, rather than rides or performances. A field guide, camera, or small pair of binoculars can make the walk more rewarding.
