Waste prevention in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands Waste Prevention Office (Oprib) is an agency linked to the Government of the Balearic Islands. Its goal is to help residents, businesses, and institutions move beyond a throwaway culture and make waste prevention and the circular economy central priorities.

Waste figures for the Balearic Islands

According to information published by the office, the Balearic Islands generate more waste per resident than any other region in Spain: more than half a ton per person each year, a figure that has risen over the past decade. Only 16% of the waste produced is sent for recycling; the rest is incinerated or sent to landfills. Oprib shares these figures alongside applicable regulations and studies on waste generation, management, and prevention.

Projects and campaigns

The office runs awareness campaigns such as “Som gestió de residus” (“We Are Waste Management”), promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands to improve waste management and influence consumption and sorting habits. It also takes part in European Week for Waste Reduction, held simultaneously in 34 regions with support from the European Commission, and initiatives such as “Cuida la teva salut, cuida el medi ambient” (“Care for Your Health, Care for the Environment”), which aims to reduce waste and promote toxin-free menstruation.
