About Registro de Cáncer de Granada

Four decades of cancer data and research

The Granada Cancer Registry (RCG) is a population-based cancer registry that began in 1985 as a project of the Regional Ministry of Health, Presidency, and Emergencies of the Government of Andalusia. It has been based at the Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP) since its creation. Since 2007, it has been part of the Andalusia Cancer Registry, established under Decree 297/2007 and later Decree 286/2019.

With 40 years of activity, the RCG describes itself as more than an information system: its research component has led it to define itself as a cancer research unit.

Statistics and research

The registry combines population-level cancer statistics for Granada province with epidemiological research. Its statistics include:

  • Cancer incidence in Granada province
  • Cancer incidence among children and adolescents in the province
  • Time trends and projections of cancer incidence
  • Estimates of cancer incidence in Andalusia
  • Mortality, survival, and prevalence
  • Public-facing infographics

Its research focuses on three main areas: descriptive cancer epidemiology; risk factors for cancer and other chronic diseases; and healthcare, including the evaluation of health outcomes for cancer patients.

Professional networks

The RCG is a member of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR), whose activities are coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It also belongs to the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) and the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN). Its research affiliations include CIBERESP, Spain’s Networked Biomedical Research Centre for Epidemiology and Public Health, and the Granada Biosanitary Research Institute (ibs.GRANADA). It is one of 11 Spanish population-based cancer registries to have contributed data to successive editions of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (Volume XII), an international reference publication edited by the IARC.
