About El legado andalusí

A public cultural foundation in Granada

El legado andalusí is a public foundation of the Andalusian regional government, under its Department of Culture and Sport, with the legal status of an in-house entity. Based at Granada’s Corral del Carbón, it works to preserve and share the cultural and artistic heritage of al-Andalus and Andalucía’s and Spain’s historic role as a bridge between cultures.

Routes, exhibitions, and cultural travel

The foundation’s work includes the Routes of El legado andalusí, cultural itineraries, exhibitions, travel programs, and European projects. It works with public and private institutions.

Exploring the routes

The routes can be traveled by car, on foot, or by bicycle. They connect with UNESCO World Heritage sites and Paradores hotels along the way, and the foundation also develops cross-border itineraries rooted in al-Andalus’s historical, social, and cultural ties with the Muslim world.

A Council of Europe Cultural Route

The Routes of El legado andalusí have held Council of Europe Cultural Route status since 1997.

Exhibitions and conferences

The foundation organizes exhibitions on Andalusi culture. Past shows it cites include Morisco Dances for Emperor Charles V: Musical Instruments of al-Andalus, When Color Lit the Garden: Granada, 1513–1975, Gardens of the Generalife and the Alhambra: The Miracle Born of Water, and Andalusi Architecture: Spaces and Perspectives, presented in Jerez de la Frontera. It has also organized the international “Juntando Arrayanes” conference on the gardens of the Alhambra, the Generalife, and the Mediterranean, as well as symposia on Ruy González de Clavijo’s embassy to Timur.

Books and publications

The foundation has published more than 70 scholarly and general-interest titles on history, culture, and tourism, and maintains its own catalog.

European projects

Its international initiatives include iHeritage and the Blue Horizons workshop, which focuses on innovative water-saving solutions for Mediterranean tourism.
