Community advocacy in El Saler

Asociación de Vecinos de la Dehesa de El Saler (AVV Dehesa Saler) is a nonprofit formed to advocate for cultural, social, and service infrastructure for residents of the Devesa de El Saler. The area lies between the old village and the Gola de Pujol landing in Albufera Natural Park, Valencia. The association promotes resident participation and communicates with public agencies.

History

The association was formed in the summer of 1981 after a wildfire the previous year threatened homes in the Devesa forest. It was the first neighborhood association in Valencia province to be legally registered with the Civil Government, on July 14, 1981. It became inactive in 1996 amid low participation and disputes with the administration. In June 2010, a new board revived it and adopted bylaws under the current Organic Law.

Organization and transparency

The board includes a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and four members. The association maintains a transparency portal and posts accounting records for 2014–15 and 2016–19.

• Gaps in public transportation, especially outside the summer months.
• Insufficient lighting in many homes, with implications for safety.
• Missing crosswalk signs.
• Forest cleanup and monitoring to help prevent fires.
• Fiber-optic service in the area.
• Restoration of Garrofera Beach and sand loss on beaches south of Valencia’s port.

News and community events

The association publishes news and campaigns related to the Devesa and Albufera, including forest-fire prevention plans, the status of Hotel Sidi, the Devesa-Albufera bird guide, and development changes in the area. It also organizes neighborhood events and activities.
