Astilleros de Santander, S.A.U. (ASTANDER) is a shipyard at the southern end of the Port of Santander on Spain's northern coast. It repairs, converts, and builds ships, work it has carried out for more than 140 years, earning international recognition in the industry.

History

The company was founded as a forge in 1872 by Bernardo Lavín. It carried out its first afloat repair in 1913 and opened Dry Dock No. 1 (109 m by 15.8 m) in 1922. Its first vessel was built in 1930. The dock was extended to 123 m in 1950 and reached its current dimensions of 160 m by 23.8 m in 1981. The first conversion took place in 1952, when the MONTEFARO was lengthened and its bottom renewed. A 1,200-ton slipway was built in 1957, and the larger second dry dock, measuring 230 m by 32.8 m, was completed in 1969. In 1965, the Spanish government, through the Ministry of Industry, acquired all shares, and the shipyard became part of Astilleros Españoles S.A. In late 1999, private investor ITALMAR Group acquired 100% of the shares; the company says that ownership remains in place.

Group and international presence

ASTANDER is part of the same group as Astilleros de Canarias S.A. (ASTICAN) in Las Palmas and Astibal in Panama. The group has agents in Greece, Cyprus, and Spain (Alimia Group). This network supports projects in the Bay of Biscay and along the West African coast.

The shipyard operates under certified management systems and says it promotes high standards in health, safety, environmental management, quality, and research, development, and innovation.
