Growing food and teaching sustainability in Collserola

L'Ortiga is a second-tier cooperative based at the public Can Monmany estate in Collserola. It practices organic agriculture and develops educational and advisory projects focused on sustainable, locally sourced food. The cooperative describes itself as both a producer and educator, combining farming with educational services and support for gardens.

Organic produce and delivery boxes

At Can Monmany, L'Ortiga grows vegetables and prepares organic produce boxes for weekly or every-other-week home delivery. Customers can customize their boxes. The cooperative also sells directly at the Valldoreix market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering local organic fruit and vegetables. It works with outside producers too, including FruitalpuntBio, which supplies fruit from Franja de Ponent for the boxes.

Education and training

L'Ortiga offers school activities on organic farming and sustainability for all grade levels, as well as programs for school gardens, homeschooling, cultural facilities, and school meals. Its training includes practical courses in organic growing for personal use, organic agriculture, and agroecology advising.

Garden projects and social farming

The cooperative designs urban gardens for public agencies and organizations, facilitates community gardens, and advises on social-farming projects. Its work also includes restoring Collserola's agricultural landscape and heritage.
