About IRTA

Research for more sustainable food systems

IRTA is a research institute focused on the sustainable transformation of agri-food systems. With nearly 1,000 people working across 21 locations in Catalonia, it combines scientific research with practical innovation for the sector.

Research priorities

IRTA organizes its work around four broad areas: climate resilience, sustainable production intensification, One Health, and digitalization and transformative technologies. Its research includes digital transformation in the agri-food sector; better water management for agriculture; soil health and carbon sequestration; turning organic waste and byproducts into resources for the bioeconomy; alternative protein; animal health and welfare as antibiotic use is reduced; resilience to emerging biological risks; and viticulture.

Research network across Catalonia

IRTA operates a network of research centers and experimental farms in the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. Its facilities include CRAG, CREDA, EVAM, IRTA Cabrils, IRTA CReSA, IRTA Torre Marimon, IRTA Mas Badia, IRTA Monells, IRTA Fruitcentre, IRTA Pirineu, IRTA Amposta, IRTA la Ràpita, IRTA Mas Bové, and IRTA Agrònoms. It also runs experimental farms in Gimenells, Les Borges Blanques, Mollerussa, Alcarràs, and Gandesa, along with the Granges Experimentals de Porcí in Monells.

Services and technology transfer

In addition to research, IRTA offers consulting on research and innovation funding, technology management, and industrial property.
