FusionCAT
A research initiative that brought Catalan scientific institutions, universities and industrial partners together to develop fusion expertise and support technology transfer.
About FusionCAT
What FusionCAT is
FusionCAT is a research initiative created to strengthen the fusion community in Catalonia. It brought research institutions, universities and industrial partners together to build regional expertise, transfer technology and develop knowledge relevant to future fusion-energy systems.
Research goals
- Develop industrial capabilities for fusion energy in Catalonia.
- Transfer technology from participating research institutions to industry.
- Create multiphysics codes for plasma and fusion-reactor modeling.
- Study neutron effects, the fuel cycle and the connection between breeding blankets and tritium extraction.
- Investigate high-temperature-superconductor magnets, material durability and possible reactor energy cycles.
Consortium
Participants included the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), Fundació b_TEC, Eurecat, ICMAB, IQS School of Engineering, IREC and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Their contributions ranged from high-performance computing and simulation to molten-metal experiments, high-temperature superconductors, advanced energy materials, engineering and industry outreach.
Funding
FusionCAT was recorded as project 001-P-001722 and received 50% cofinancing, totaling €1,960,963.66, from the European Regional Development Fund through Catalonia's 2014–2020 ERDF operational program, with support from the Government of Catalonia. The dates identify a historical funding period rather than evidence that the same grant remains active.
