A Barcelona-based foundation advancing clinical and translational research into chronic liver failure through international hospital networks, research projects, and professional education.
About EF CLIF - European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure
About EF CLIF
The European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure (EF CLIF) is a Barcelona-based foundation focused on clinical and translational research into chronic liver failure. Its stated goal is to address unmet needs through research projects, an international network of hospitals, and training programs.
Research and projects
EF CLIF organizes research around liver pathophysiology, the clinical course of chronic liver disease, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic innovation. Major projects include observational studies such as ACLARA, CANONIC, CHANCE, COBALT, and PREDICT, as well as the translational research project DISCOVERY and the Grifols Chair program.
Research is funded by the European Union, other public entities, and private companies. The foundation also publishes study results in scientific journals.
Network and partnerships
EF CLIF works with tertiary-care centers and university hospitals around the world. It coordinates the EASL-CLIF Consortium and the European Network for Translational Research and runs global projects with various partners. It recently formed a partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim to explore new treatment approaches for patients with decompensated cirrhosis.
Training
The foundation offers an advanced master's program in hepatology research, endorsed by the University of Barcelona. The program is fully online and flexible, with expert videos, selected readings, and interactive learning based on clinical cases and applied exercises. It is designed for professionals seeking to lead innovation and contribute to international liver-care research networks.
Access to data and samples
Through its Data Hub, EF CLIF gives researchers access to data and samples for their own studies. Researchers may submit proposals for review.
Clinical tools
The foundation developed the CLIF-C predictive scores, which are used sequentially for hospitalized patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis. They include CLIF-C OF, which assesses six organ systems and diagnoses acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF); CLIF-C ACLF, which predicts 28-day mortality risk in patients with ACLF; and CLIF-C AD, which estimates the risk of ACLF and 3-month mortality for patients without ACLF. EF CLIF provides an online calculator for these scores.
