About Yamuna

Community-led development in Madagascar

Yamuna is an international development nonprofit that works directly and comprehensively with communities facing extreme poverty in Madagascar. The organization describes itself as small and close to the communities it serves and says it also worked in India for 17 years. Its current focus is support for children in Madagascar.

Programs

The organization organizes its work into four main programs:

  • Children's program.
  • Women's program.
  • Disability program.
  • Community-awareness program.

People served by these projects come from communities facing severe marginalization and very difficult living conditions. Yamuna sees education and training as ways to break the cycle of poverty and help children grow into adulthood with stronger opportunities.

Volunteer stays

Yamuna offers volunteer stays in Madagascar for people who want to learn firsthand about the local team's work and experience a different perspective on the country while traveling.

Ways to support the work

  • Donation: a one-time or recurring contribution for needs across the organization's projects.
  • Sponsorship: €20 per month, which the organization says covers a child's schooling, three meals a day, and regular medical care for one month in its Madagascar programs.
  • Membership: starting at €10 per month, with members choosing the amount and frequency.
  • Organizational partnership: businesses and organizations can support social-change projects by sponsoring a classroom of 30 children, funding a vocational-training workshop, or supporting a single-parent household of six.
