Education as a foundation for development

Fundació PROIDE (Promoció i Desenvolupament) is a Catalan nonprofit established in 1992 and connected with La Salle schools in Catalonia. It works in international development through education projects in countries facing poverty.

Projects by country

The foundation says it works in six countries, with projects tailored to local contexts. The projects described include:

• Peru: training teachers in bilingual intercultural education in the Amazon; supporting the “Tiéndeme la Mano” children's center in Iquitos; building educational spaces; and supporting the La Salle Rimarinakusunchis Quechua educational radio station in Urubamba.
• Guatemala: bilingual intercultural education; support for La Salle Tierra Nueva I and Santa María Visitación schools; the Kemon Ch'ab'äl literacy program; and agroecology-training scholarships at Instituto Maya Mam K'ulb'il Nab'il in Colotenango.
• Togo: construction projects at 78 rural schools in the north, support for the rural-school network, textbook scholarships, and teacher training.
• Madagascar: repairs and furnishings for La Salle schools, school and university scholarships, and financial support for urgent medical care.
• Lebanon: academic support and psychosocial services for children and young people ages 3 to 15; basic literacy; recreation through a children's club, summer camps, and a sports school; and training for young people and women.

Volunteering

Volunteer work is central to the foundation. Opportunities include local volunteering at the main office and regional branches, longer-term placements, and the summer “Estiu Solidari” program. Tasks include developing and managing projects, preparing educational materials, public-awareness campaigns, and fundraising.

Reach and accountability

According to the foundation, it has 1,400 volunteers and collaborators, 3,000 beneficiaries, and a presence in six countries. It maintains an internal information channel and publishes annual reports.
