Organic food cooperation in Poblenou

La Unió de Poblenou – La Datzira is an organic food production and consumer cooperative based in Barcelona’s Poblenou neighborhood. It connects producers and consumers and promotes local agroecology and responsible consumption.

Activities and projects

The cooperative takes part in organizing organic producer fairs, including the Fira de Productores Ecològiques del Poblenou, which held its fourth edition in 2016 with 18 vendor stalls. The fairs introduce local producers and feature workshops and activities for children and adults.

It is part of AMAP-La Unió La Datzira, an alliance in which producers and consumers support one another. Participating producers include Riet Vell, which sells pasta and rice from the Ebro Delta, and Cooperativa La Datzira, which supplies vegetables, eggs, bread, mató cheese, yogurt, cured meats, and other foods.

Social and environmental commitment

The cooperative raises awareness of global food-system issues and takes part in solidarity and food-sovereignty initiatives. It also supports environmental and human-rights causes, including efforts to honor Wangari Maathai’s legacy and the Green Belt Movement.
