About La Garangola
Neighborhood food buying in Sagrada Família
La Garangola is an organic food-buying group formed by residents of Barcelona’s Sagrada Família neighborhood. It operates as a cooperative, with every member taking an active part in organizing the group and sharing its work.
Products and suppliers
The group places weekly orders for organic fruit and vegetables. Other products are ordered less often, about once or twice a month:
- Bread
- Eggs
- Cheese
- Beef, pork, chicken, and lamb
- Olive oil and almonds
- Cosmetics
- Beer
Pickup
Orders are picked up at La Caníbal bookstore, 314 Carrer de Nàpols, 08025 Barcelona. Pickup takes place on Wednesdays; the group’s information lists two different time ranges, 7:30–8:30 p.m. and 8–9 p.m.
Membership and shared costs
Joining the cooperative requires a €20 deposit, which is refunded when a member leaves. Members pay monthly for their baskets, plus about €6 per month toward the space and transportation. Products from other suppliers are paid for in cash on Wednesdays.
Each member joins a committee: suppliers, finances, internal affairs (assemblies, shifts, and member communications), outreach to other food-buying groups and neighborhood organizations, or the space. Shifts to receive suppliers and prepare baskets rotate among members.
