About Fundación Internacional Olof Palme
Human rights, peace, and international solidarity
Fundación Internacional Olof Palme (FIOP) is a nonprofit founded in 1989 by a group that included Lisbeth Palme, Felipe González, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, Joan Reventós, and Anna Balletbò. It works to preserve the legacy of Olof Palme, Sweden's prime minister who was assassinated in Stockholm on February 28, 1986. Its focus includes human rights, peace, conflict mediation, sustainable development, and international solidarity.
Areas of work
The foundation's work has two main areas:
- Academic programs: Annual activities with professors, specialists, and experts across fields. The program has three departments: crises and conflict; human rights and international politics; and the environment.
- International cooperation and humanitarian aid: Development projects and humanitarian relief and reconstruction, particularly in areas affected by armed conflict. The foundation prioritizes countries facing low human-development levels, inequality, poverty, or emergencies, with projects focused on gender equality, education, health, and human rights.
International projects
Since 1989, the foundation has carried out cooperation projects in countries including Palestine, Kosovo, Algeria, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco, Afghanistan, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, and Namibia. It has worked in Equatorial Guinea since 2004, when it opened a pro bono legal office in Malabo. Documented projects include building the SIRA Special Education School in Jericho, Palestine; training activities in Malabo and Bata; school workshops on children's rights in Equatorial Guinea; an exchange program in Georgia; and donating a tractor to an agricultural community in Curamba Turinamba, Peru.
Public events
The foundation organizes seminars and discussion breakfasts on current international issues. Events include the sixth Geopolitics Seminar, focused on shared common security, and discussions with public officials, including one with Jordi Valls, Barcelona's fourth deputy mayor.
