About Novact

Building peace through nonviolent action

Novact is a nonprofit organization working across the Euro-Mediterranean region to defend life and freedoms and advance a just, lasting peace through nonviolent action. Its work spans Europe, the Maghreb, and the Middle East, with a presence in several countries.

Areas of work

  • Human rights: supports nonviolent human rights defenders and movements, helping build an ecosystem for social change in response to authoritarianism.
  • Preventing violent conflict: strengthens and supports civil society as a central actor in conflict prevention, with the aim of reducing violence and building positive peace.
  • Preventing corporate abuse: speaks out against corporate abuses and impunity and supports binding laws that hold companies accountable.
  • Developing alternatives: encourages new economic and social relationships that promote local, ethical, and responsible consumption and advance nonviolence, environmental justice, and financial justice.
  • Organizational change: works to make its own organization increasingly nonviolent, horizontal, and feminist.

Reports and educational resources

Novact publishes reports and educational guides on a range of issues. Recent work includes:

  • Voices from the Resistance (2025), a report with ACAPS Catalunya documenting human rights violations in occupied Western Sahara. It records 170 violations, a 70% increase from the previous year.
  • A report from the BREEZE project, comparative research in Georgia, Germany, Spain, and Ukraine on how young people experience conflict, with a framework for bringing a conflict-transforming perspective into youth work.
  • The 2025 annual report on the right to protest in Spain, published through the Defender a quien Defiende platform, which finds that repression has intensified.
  • Resource guides for working with young people on environmental justice, poverty, interculturalism and antiracism, gender equality, human rights, and communities free from hate and disinformation.

International presence

Novact has offices in several regions:

  • Europe: Barcelona and Madrid.
  • Maghreb: Tunis and the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf.
  • Mashreq: Amman, Ramallah, and Erbil.

The organization recently opened an office in Kyiv to strengthen its work with Ukrainian civil society.
