About Fundación Espriu

Promoting cooperative health care

Fundación Espriu is a private nonprofit established in 1989 that brings together major cooperative health care organizations in Spain. Its mission is to promote and defend the cooperative health care model developed by Dr. Josep Espriu, coordinating the efforts of Grup Assistència and Grupo ASISA to present this model as a way to strengthen health systems.

Member organizations

The foundation brings together four organizations: SCIAS, Autogestió Sanitària, ASISA, and Lavinia. Together, they form one of the world’s largest health care cooperative networks, with care based on collaboration, solidarity, and democratic management.

Network in numbers

  • 3.2 million insured people
  • 19 hospitals and 40 owned medical centers
  • 181,303 cooperative members
  • 7,500 employees

How the model works

The member organizations operate without a commercial profit motive. Surpluses are reinvested for the benefit of members and patients, care quality, and technological innovation. Stakeholders participate in management, and the privately run organizations remain open to working with public health services.

Magazine and public outreach

The foundation publishes Compartir, a print and digital magazine in Spanish, Catalan, and English that combines health topics with culture, travel, food, and leisure. Subscriptions are free and can be requested at compartir@fespriu.org.
