About Associació Projecte NANA
Practical support for newborns and mothers
Associació Projecte NANA is a private, independent nonprofit founded in June 2012. As set out in Article 2 of its bylaws, its purpose is to provide, free of charge, basic clothing and hygiene supplies for a baby’s first three months and for the mother after childbirth, serving families with limited resources.
Where it works
The association operates across Catalonia, with a particular focus on Barcelona and its metropolitan area.
What the starter kit includes
The kit, called a “canastreta,” is designed to cover a baby’s needs from birth through three months. It includes:
- Size 1 or 2 diapers
- Baby moisturizer
- Newborn-size pacifier
- Bottle
- Blanket or muslin wrap (summer)
- Wool or lightweight knit sweater
- Towel
- Bibs
- Hats
- Newborn bodysuits, sizes 50 or 56
- Sleepers, sizes 50 or 56
- Footed pants, sizes 50 or 56
- An outfit for going out
- Small stuffed animal or teether
- Socks for ages 1 to 3 months
How it works
The association relies on volunteers who contribute their time and skills, as well as friends and members who make financial contributions. It also contacts businesses with social responsibility programs that donate supplies.
A maternal and child social worker must submit the request for a canastreta through the website and assess the family’s needs.
Background
The project was created in response to hardship faced by some children in Catalonia. The association cites a UNICEF study published in Barcelona on May 29, 2012, which found that one in four children lived in a household at the poverty threshold. It notes that figures updated in September 2022 showed no change.
