About MEXCAT - Asociación Cultural Mexicano Catalana
Mexican and Catalan cultural exchange
Asociación Cultural Mexicano Catalana (MEXCAT) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nonreligious organization founded in August 2008. It began in Mexico by promoting Catalan culture and, since September 2010, has organized regular events in Catalonia to share Mexican culture and create a meeting point between the two traditions.
Main events and programs
Each September, MEXCAT organizes Barcelona Vive México, known as “El Grito de México en Barcelona.” Held at Poble Espanyol, it is described as Europe's largest Mexican festival. The event features food, music, dance, lucha libre, art, and family activities and celebrates Mexican independence. The association also organizes Barcelona's Day of the Dead celebrations and the Mexican and Latin American Fashion Showcase, a cultural-exchange project featuring textile design, footwear, jewelry, and accessories.
Recognition
During Barcelona Vive México, MEXCAT received the Ohtli Recognition, the highest distinction awarded by the Government of Mexico through the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, for 17 years of promoting Mexican culture and building connections between Mexico and Catalonia. The ceremony was attended by acting consul Alfonso Navarro and Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni.
