About La Borda
A cooperative housing project in La Bordeta
La Borda is a right-of-use housing cooperative in the La Bordeta neighborhood of Barcelona's Sants district. The project grew out of the recovery of the former Can Batlló factory and is based on a non-speculative form of tenure: residents neither rent nor buy their homes but hold a right of use, placing residents at the center of the project.
The building and shared spaces
The building has 28 homes in three layouts, along with a range of shared spaces. The project is designed around sustainability, community, and resident participation. It stands on municipal land designated for protected housing, with the cooperative holding a 75-year surface-right agreement.
Financing and cooperative life
The project is financed through the solidarity economy, ethical finance, and contributions from organizations and individuals. Shared life is organized through assemblies, mutual-support efforts, and meals in the communal kitchen and dining room, among other forms of living together.
