About Fundació Planas Casals
Health and education programs rooted in Barcelona
Fundació Planas Casals is a nonprofit established in Barcelona in 2009 through the legacy of Pedro Planas Casals, a mathematician and physicist. Its work focuses on health and education projects for older adults, young people, and women, with programs in several regions of Catalonia.
Programs and services
- Training: courses for family members, professionals, and volunteers who support or care for people with long-term care needs at home.
- Volunteering: a program intended to improve the lives of people who are isolated or have little family support and live in care facilities.
- Guidance: advice related to long-term care and mobility assistance.
- Other projects: support for organizations with shared educational, cultural, or intergenerational goals.
Projects and growth
The foundation has developed several projects over the years: DARE, which provides training and volunteer support for people caring for older adults or people who need assistance; PALLARS, a collaboration with Associació Pallars in Lleida; ORIENTA, guidance on benefits and assistance related to long-term care and disability; and GUARDA, a volunteer program in residential care facilities. Since 2014, the foundation has expanded beyond Barcelona, and since 2021 it has offered training on a regular basis.
Recent work
Highlights from the most recent program year include seven volunteer-training sessions, responding to 40 requests for companionship and access to disability or long-term care resources, signing three new volunteer agreements with senior residences in Lleida, Castelldefels, and Barcelona's Eixample district, and launching a pilot prevention program.
