About Ferrer Music Foundation

About the foundation

Ferrer Music Foundation is a Barcelona nonprofit established in 1982. It works to make music a tool for personal and social transformation and is part of Fundacions Ferrer, a group of five organizations linked to pharmaceutical company Ferrer.

Musical excellence

The foundation awards the Queen Sofía Music Composition Award (Premi Reina Sofía de Composició Musical) each year. The 44th edition increased the prize pool to €175,000 and added two new awards. It also offers scholarships for young talent through the Ferrer-Salat program, in collaboration with Conservatori Liceu, and the JONDE-Ferrer Salat program with Spain’s National Youth Orchestra (Jove Orquestra Nacional d'Espanya). Other initiatives include Lied the Future, master classes, and support for Liceu.

Social inclusion

The foundation develops educational and community projects in schools in underserved neighborhoods. Programs serve elementary, secondary, and preschool students, using music to encourage self-esteem, collaboration, and personal and social skills.

Research

The foundation also supports research into the relationship between music learning and cognitive, emotional, and social development, with particular attention to children with neurodevelopmental disorders and the potential for music-based diagnosis and treatment.
